What are Advance Directives?
Advance Directives are legal documents that dictate what will happen to you, should you no longer be able to make those decisions for yourself, whether that be due to illness or incapacity.
Types of Advance Directives
A living will is just one type of advance directive, which provides specific instructions for your treatment that healthcare providers and caregivers are to follow. A Durable Power of Attorney authorizes a person of your choosing to make decisions on your behalf, should you be unable to. You can even do a Power of Attorney for Finances, or Healthcare, or both!

Along with advance directives, it is important to have a Will or Trust. In some circumstances, it may be necessary to obtain Guardianship or Conservatorship, or establish a Special Needs Trust.
